Radical Puglia was born from a chat over a glass of wine during a hot Australian summer night.
Its founders are two good friends, Salvatore and Roberta. Both grew up in Puglia and now live in Australia with their families. They have never severed their bond with the motherland; they continue to keep its traditions and culture alive across the oceans, with deep roots in both countries.
Salvatore is a musician who, with his band Santa Taranta, has succeeded in spreading the knowledge and creating interest for traditional folk music from Puglia (Pizzica Pizzica) within the local Australian community. He may be found banging a tambourine around Northcote or getting about the city in a yellow Holden Barina.
Roberta is a foodie who has maintained her regional culinary traditions and particularly enjoys sharing them. She may be found dancing the tarantella, red scarf in hand, around Melbourne with local Pizzica enthusiasts, and has been known to bring her sourdough with her to parties.
They decided that Puglia is too good not to share. And after hosting many friends and family in Puglia over the years, they have joined their passions creating a travel company that allows everyone to join them for the ride. The want to provide the opportunity for everyone to truly experience the wonders of Puglia. As Australians, they understand the experience that travellers are seeking, and as Pugliese, they are well placed to provide it.
The name Radical Puglia is an homage to their Apulian roots (from the Italian Radici). It also reflects our mission. We aim to explore the region in a ‘radical’ manner, through the eyes of two locals, that understand both Italian (Pugliese) and Australian ways, having lived their lives with a foot in each country.
